The Grammy nominated Joe Satriani is best known for his instrumental rock guitar skills, earning him a reputation as a "Shred" guitarist; though he can play a vairety of instruments in numerous styles. Shred guitar involves fast, electric guitar solos and is usually associated with heavy metal and rock.

Satriani has been linked to lots of famous names, among them Mick Jagger, who recruited him as a lead guitarist for his first solo tour. He's also worked with Alice Copper, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson, Larry LaLonde, Brian May, Deep Purple (among others) and is presently the lead guitarist for band Chickenfoot. Chickenfoot, often referred to as a supergroup, also contains Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and ex Van Halen memebers Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony.

He lists some of his influences as Jimmy Paige, Eirc Clapton and Jeff Beck;l and famously told how he was inspired to play the guitar when he was 14 after hearing of the intimely death of Jimi Hendrix. After moving to Californa he began teaching his skill in guitar; his students including future members of Metallica, Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind and Exodus.

1989 saw the release of album Flying In a Blue Dream, which was dedicated to his father who passed away the same year. His album The Extremist (1992) is his most critically acclaimed and commercially successful album to date, with Summer Song being used by Sony in a major advertising campaign, creating a buzz around him and providing exposure fo rth album. In 1996 he founded G3 - a concert tour made up of three instrumental rock guitarists including Satriani.
