Peterson narrates, present-tense, with a noirish turn of phrase. “I’m standing here like a rotting side dish,” she says at a shoot for Helmut Newton, now a 26-year-old losing out to a younger model. This is Raymond Chandler with kohl eyes. It’s all rather impressive, as Peterson jumps between different characters — her abrasive mum; the head of the Ford Agency; numerous designers and models.
